AI, Trust, and the Future of Exposure Management: What to Watch Heading Into RSAC 2026

Next week, the cybersecurity industry will gather in San Francisco for the RSAC Conference. If early conversations and announcements are any indication, one topic will dominate the agenda this year: AI.
Nearly every vendor will be talking about it, keynotes will focus on it, product launches will center around it. The level of attention is not surprising; security teams are facing an environment that is simply too large, too dynamic, and too interconnected to manage through manual analysis alone.
Beneath the noise, something more meaningful is happening in Cybersecurity.
From conversations we have had with CISOs over the past year, it’s clear the market has moved beyond the early curiosity phase of AI in cybersecurity. Not long ago, AI often appeared in security conversations as a way to justify new tooling budgets or signal innovation. Today the discussion is much more practical.
Security leaders are no longer asking whether AI will play a role in their programs. They are asking how quickly they can begin implementing it and where it can deliver real operational value.
Many CISOs recognize that if they do not operationalize AI quickly, their adversaries will. Security researchers and intelligence agencies are already observing threat actors experimenting with generative AI to accelerate multiple stages of the attack lifecycle. Microsoft has reported state affiliated actors using AI for reconnaissance and phishing development. Researchers have demonstrated how large language models can identify software vulnerabilities and generate exploit code. Law enforcement agencies warn that criminals are using AI to scale phishing, impersonation, and malware development at unprecedented speed.
These developments highlight a familiar reality in cybersecurity. Most successful attacks do not rely on zero day vulnerabilities. They rely on known exposures, incomplete remediation, and the operational complexity of modern environments.
At the same time, enterprise security teams are drowning in telemetry, alerts, and findings generated across dozens of tools spanning cloud, infrastructure, applications, and identity.
The industry does not have a visibility problem, it has a decision problem. Most organizations already know where thousands of vulnerabilities, exposures, and misconfigurations exist across their environments. What they struggle with is:

The first wave of AI in cybersecurity focused largely on analysis. Tools used machine learning to classify alerts, detect anomalies, or prioritize vulnerabilities. These capabilities helped reduce some noise, but they did not fundamentally change how security teams operate.
Security teams still spend large portions of their time reconciling conflicting data, determining asset ownership, validating findings across multiple scanners, and coordinating remediation across different teams. What CISOs Are Actually Looking For
In conversations with security leaders, the expectations around AI are becoming clearer.
- First, CISOs want AI that improves decision making. Security teams already have massive amounts of data. What they lack is clarity on what actions matter most.
- Second, they want explainability. Black box recommendations are difficult to operationalize and even harder to defend when decisions impact business operations. Security leaders need to understand why the system is prioritizing certain exposures and what evidence supports that recommendation.
- Third, they want AI to reduce operational friction. Many of the largest blockers in exposure management today involve incomplete asset context, inconsistent ownership data, or duplicate findings across different tools. These problems slow remediation efforts even when risk is clearly understood.
- Lastly, CISOs want AI that moves security programs closer to action. Not just more dashboards or summaries, but systems that help organizations reduce risk faster.
Trust Becomes the Defining Factor
This leads to the central challenge facing AI in security. TRUST.
Security teams are responsible for protecting critical infrastructure and business operations. Any system that influences prioritization or remediation decisions must be reliable, explainable, and controllable.
Trust begins with data integrity. AI models are only as reliable as the data they analyze. If asset inventories are incomplete or exposure data is inconsistent across tools, the resulting recommendations will be unreliable.
Trust also requires transparency. Security teams need to understand how AI models arrived at a recommendation, what signals were considered, and how confident the system is in its conclusions.
Finally, trust requires guardrails around action. AI can assist in analysis and prioritization today, but fully autonomous remediation requires clear policy controls, auditability, and strong operational safeguards.
This is where the next phase of AI in exposure management will unfold.
Moving From Data Orchestration to Decision Orchestration
The first generation of exposure management platforms focused primarily on data orchestration. They aggregated signals from scanners, cloud tools, asset inventories, and threat intelligence feeds into a unified data model.
That was an important step. It created visibility and enabled organizations to understand their exposure landscape. But visibility alone does not reduce risk. The next evolution of exposure management is decision orchestration.
Decision orchestration is the ability to continuously analyze relationships between exposures, assets, threat activity, and business context in order to determine the actions that will most effectively reduce risk.
Instead of simply aggregating findings, the platform helps answer the questions security teams face every day:
- Which exposures are truly exploitable in our environment
- Which assets are most critical to the business
- Which teams are responsible for remediation
- Which actions will actually reduce risk
AI plays a central role in this transition. By correlating signals across multiple security systems and applying contextual reasoning, AI can elevate exposure management from a reporting function to an operational decision engine.
Over time, these systems will increasingly guide remediation actions across security, infrastructure, and application teams.
What is The Next Generation of Exposure Management?
This shift is already beginning to appear in how exposure management platforms are evolving.
Rather than applying AI as a thin analytical layer, the next generation of platforms are embedding AI across the core layers of the exposure management architecture. A unified data layer consolidates exposure and asset intelligence. An AI layer provides explainable analysis and contextual recommendations. An orchestration layer connects those insights directly to remediation workflows across the organization.
